Style Watch: Perpetual Patterns
Patterned fabric was huge in the 70s and trickled out of style in the last couple of decades but now it’s back and it’s everywhere. You’ve probably noticed people wearing patterned clothing recently and whether the pattern is bunnies, keys or abstract shapes, the fact is that there are so many patterns to choose from and fall in love with. Patterns are an easy way to add some pizzazz to any ordinary old outfit because wearing them means you can tone down accessory usage; some patterns are just loud enough to be on their own. However, if you are a bold one, you may decide to throw a few patterns together. If this is the case, you’ll want to choose colors and pattern sizes that will compliment each other.
You should never wear a top and a bottom with the same pattern on it. Just because super models get away with it on the runway, doesn’t mean it’s right. By wearing these identical patterns on both top and bottom, you’ll look like you never changed out of your PJs that morning. While we all want to look effortless, that will just make you look lazy. Don’t be afraid to be bold and loud! One of the comments I hear the most when I go shopping with girls is, “I wish I could get away with that.” Well, you can. There are so many ways to put an outfit together and make it work just for you.
If you’re new to patterns, go with a simple top at first. Flower print is a classic choice if you don’t already own a few flower print pieces. However, you should try to go with a pattern that you think is cute but maybe wouldn’t have been your first choice. Now that you’ve found your pattern, find a pair of bottoms that will go with your top. Pick any color that is being used in the pattern on your top and find a bottom in that color (try not to pick black, being that it’s Spring you should pick something light or bright).
Rule of thumb: If you’re rocking a curvy or larger frame, go with the smaller patterns. If your small and petite, go for the larger patterns. Whatever pattern you do decide to wear, just make sure to wear it with confidence.
