Like my top? Keep reading and find out how you can make one of your own!
❶ First, pick out a loose-fitting t-shirt that you don’t really get too much wear out of anymore. A bright colored top would be fabulous for this particular project because this crop top provides a very Summery look. Put on your shirt and decide what length you’d like it to be and mark the spot with a safety pin. I cut mine about three inches above my belly button but the length is all up to your preference.
❷ Now that you’ve marked your spot, remove the shirt and lay it down on a flat surface (the floor or your desk) with the back of the shirt facing up (because you’re going to start with cutting off the back). Cutting only the back layer of your shirt, cut upward to the point where you left your safety pin and then straight across to the other side and down again. You’re essentially cutting out the bottom part of the back of your shirt (refer to the picture at the bottom of the page to get a visual).
❸ You should only have the front flap of your shirt left so now you’re going to fold each side of the front flap up to form a diamond shape. Almost like folding a piece of paper into a diamond but here you’re only folding the bottom part. After folding up the two flaps, cut off the top excess fabric and this will leave you with a shape that looks like the top of a triangle.
❹ Cut a slit up the center of the triangle shape. You can cut the slit a little bit past the bottom of the back of the shirt just to leave room for the bulge of the knot.
❺ Now take the two flaps of fabric, tie them into a knot and you’re all set!
This is such an easy (it only took me 5 minutes to complete) and fun way to recycle your abandoned garments and feel proud about doing it. Don’t feel limited by the shirt that I happened to choose, you can definitely use this technique on graphic tees and tank tops, have fun with it!!
